Olivier Soustelle earned a law degree in his native France before he turned his attention to the academic study of fine art. His path to expertise in the European decorative arts, and more specifically the arts of France, took him to the United Kingdom where he obtained a Master’s degree in the history and connoisseurship of Fine and Decorative Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. Under the direction of eminent scholars and experts, Olivier Soustelle spent several years studying France’s and England’s distinguished private and National Trust collections of pre-revolutionary French royal furniture and decorative arts.
After working in the European Furniture department at Sotheby’s London auction house, he took a position at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Here he researched and cataloged 17th and 18th French tapestries from the royal workshops of Gobelins, Beauvais, and Aubusson previously owned by French & Company, a prominent dealer of fine antiques and objets d’art in early 20th century New York.
As an independent consultant and founder of Soustelle Art Advisory, Olivier Soustelle travels regularly between the United States and Europe to stay abreast of evolving market conditions.
Olivier Soustelle advises clients who require expert knowledge and experience in proper valuation methodology. He has successfully completed the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) certification, and as a fully Accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers he has provided valuations, offered advice, and facilitated the acquisition of fine antiques for private collectors and the high-end residential interior design market.
Active on museum arts councils and author of several articles on French 18th and 19th century furniture, Olivier Soustelle also lectures on topics within his field. He frequently leads tours of museum collections in Paris and has taught the history of furniture and design at the college level.
